  • Match Frame/Show Master Clip in FCP 4.5

I’ve noticed some behavior in Final Cut Pro 4.5 that may be a problem in our editing process. I’ll try to explain the behavior as simply as I can.

A little background: Our master projects are all created in traditional way with all clips and sequences in standard bins, etc. We have chosen to capture audio and video separately because we are going to be merging with external audio later, so each clip listed in the Browser refers to both a video and an audio file. Sequences have been created in the master projects using the media that we have captured.

The issue arises if we copy segments from a sequence in an original master project into a sequence in a new project. If we intentionally or unintentionally delete the audio from a clip in the sequence in this new project while leaving the video, Final Cut can only Match Frame back to the video file. It appears to lose its reference to the separate audio file altogether. This is problematic because we have external audio and subtitling sequences in the master projects that are then selected in part into selects sequences in a separate project. We don’t have the luxury of keeping all of our media and sequences in the same project because we have over 600 hrs of footage (some of which is subtitled) with selects sequences and external audio sequences and our projects just get too large if we don’t subdivide the material into quite a few projects, so we need to edit sequences in different projects. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    Scott
