  • master via firewire???

Posted by Sam White on October 28, 2010 at 3:46 pm

    Hi there,

I am working on tv show show for African TV that is mastered to Mini DV. Its shot in 1080 50i xdcam ex and then rendered into SD in a Pal timeline within FCP before SD graphics are added. Normally we print to tape via a kona le card with 10bit uncompressed sequence settings.
I have to cut a show on location soon using a mac book pro but I am concerned about mastering via firewire as I dont have any other way from my laptop. Will this be Ok? what are the sacrifices if any??

    Thanks Sam

You’ll need to end up with your project on a DV timeline, which will erode your titles in a big way.

The master will be on DV anyway David, so no matter what, the damage will be done.

Just Print to Video. But know that without a capture card and deck with RS422 control, you won’t be able to output timeline timecode.

No. To output via FireWire, it must be DV.

What is the advantage of dvcam if any?

Yes, but I think the software version of the DV codec may be more destructive.

why dont you output to file rather than tape and give it to them on a 8.5Gb dvd as data or a small 320 gb hard drive they only cost about 45.oo

Because apparently they broadcast from the dv tape(in Nigeria). so it would have to go on to one anyway.
sounds weird that they broadcast from a mini dv tape but thats what we’ve been asked to deliver.

It’ll be fine Sam. Hundreds of people around the world do this every day. Cut your HD master as normal and export yourself an Apple ProRes 422 copy. Then switch your Easy Setup to DV PAL and create a new sequence and drop in that Apple ProRes 422 copy, now resize to blow out the letterbox (am assuming the Nigerian station is broadcasting 4:3 SD and does not want letterbox, but you should check that with them ahead of time) … then add your titles and graphics as necessary and use Print To Video or Edit to Tape to lay off to the DV tape.

    Hope it helps
    Andy
