  • masks on pre-comps have no effect?

I have created a pre-comp which consists of two layers: one contains a mask, and the other contains an effect. I then took that pre-comp into another composition where I want to layer it over another layer, which requires that I mask the resulting pre-comp image. But when I draw a mask over the pre-comp it doesn’t do anything. That is, it remains a solid layer, and doesn’t “cut anything out” so that I can see the layer underneath. How do you mask out parts of a pre-comp?

Yup. The Mask is set to Add. I’ve tried subtract, difference and inverted too. Masks work on everything else. So I just think there’s gotta be something about pre-comps and masks I’m missing.

Okay, stop the presses. I wondered what would happen if I removed the TimeWarp effect, also applied to the pre-comp. Lo and behold, the mask now works. So apparently it’s the fact that you can’t apply masks to a Timewarped layer, not that I can’t apply masks to a pre-comp. I’ll have to see if I can mask it and THEN apply the Timewarp after.

Okay, then I really need to know how to mask a Timewarped layer/pre-comp. That turns out to be the real issue. As soon as I add Timewarp, the mask ceases to reveal the layer beneath. Sigh.

How about masking the pre-comp, then pre-comping it and applying the Timewarp? (; Not the most elegant solution but I can’t think of any reason why it shouldn’t work.

or apply timewarp as an adjustment layer in the on comp, then use the mask as you were in the other comp.
