    Hi All,

I’m just begining to learn AE and this website is really cool – so thanks for that!

    I have a really stupid question –

I want to create a frame – either in PS or just with a shape tool, whatever. On a layer underneath I want to put a photo so it appears as if it’s inside the frame – which is easy enough.
I then want to scale up the picture slightly across the timeline – again, easy enough.

My question is this; how do I mask the ‘outside’ of the frame to stop the photo from showing when the scale becomes bigger than the frame?

I know it must be really simple!

    Thanks

It will add an extra layer, but I would use a track matte. I think this is as simple as any other way of doing it.

A track matte is a layer that works a bit like a mask – in your case, creating a shape above the photo layer and setting the PHOTO layer to alpha matte will only reveal the photo in sections that exist in the above layer.

Read up in the manual for all the details, they are very handy and important to learn 🙂
