Is there no way to put a mask at track level?
I want to add some light fill in just a certain area by using a mask and the events are all broken up over a half hour show so it’s not practical to apply it to each event.

[Roger Bansemer] “Is there no way to put a mask at track level?”

No, you can only mask events. What you want would be like an Adjustment Layer in Premiere Pro, After Effects or PhotoShop. A very powerful concept but unfortunately one that Vegas Pro does not have. 🙁

Maybe I misunderstood the question, but can’t you duplicate the track, add a color gradient in a track above, select rectangle or elliptical transparent to black and adjust it to select the area you want to lighten and brighten that track, then adjust the level of the un-lightened track (1)to mix with the lightened track (3)? Then lighten up the whole output to compensate for lowering the first track by adding a brightness and contrast effect to the preview effects?

If I understand correctly, you have Track B with multiple Events to which you’d like to apply a Mask. You could:

    a. insert Track A above B.
    b. make B a compositing child of A.
    c. change Track A’s compositing mode to Multiply
    d. put a white event (Sony Solid Color) on Track A of the needed length.
    e. add the Mask to the white event

That should apply the Mask to the events in track B.

Roger, any chance of a “still” I can play with?

Here’s a still from the footage I was wanting to make a bit lighter.
Grazie, when I talked to you earlier, that trick with the bump map helped. I don’t move around much so I just wanted to lighten the area around the area where I stand.
I can also use “fill light” to help but that doesn’t localize it as I wanted.

    How about this?

    Roger – Before

    Roger – After

    Three Plugs:

    1/- SONY: Levels

    2/- NewBlue: ColorFast

    3/- SONY: BumpMap: Spotlight

I’ve got the interest back onto you and your easel and away from that dominating Blue Sky (nice) and “popped” you having been in the shadows. The Grass is green and hence gives another layer.

This is a wee bit “crude” and would need softening/finessing. Also, I don’t know how much of your activity on that canvass needs to be seen at this distance?

I would have used a reflector to bounce some of that great outdoors Sunlight onto you. Maybe I have achieved a bit of that in post?

    Any good?

    Grazie

Will all due respect to all of the great ideas being offered here, you are all missing the point:

Yes you can “mask” an entire track with steps that Tyson outlined. NO you CANNOT apply FX to the MASKED AREA ONLY and have it AFFECT ALL of the TRACKS BELOW which is what Roger is trying to do. Vegas Pro has no way to apply FX to lower tracks from a higher track.

    His questions really was:
Can I apply the Mask in Pan/Crop that allows me to cause FX’s to only be applied to the masked area at the Track level?

He just didn’t ask it in that way but he did give the example of only highlighting himself which means that he wants the mask to mask the FX. That’s why I answered No and compared it to Adjustment Layers in Adobe products which do have this capability.

Roger, I thought about this a bit and you could either use Magic Bullet using Fill Light on the Track or use BCC Levels Gamma (or other BCC filter) with the Pixel Chooser PC Region | Inside Oval option. Pixel Chooser is in most Boris Continuum Complete filters and will allow you to only apply the FX to that small region. Like this:

Footnote: I suggested Magic Bullet and Boris Continuum Complete because I know that Roger owns both of these products already. I’m sure that other 3rd party plug-ins could have been used as well but I was trying to give him a solution that he could apply immediately.
