is there any way without using lots of masks and precomps, to remove everything below a layer with a mask…to basically cut though all the layers below it and show the background? possibly applying a mask to a adjustment layer in some way? thanks…

To essentially “cut a hole” through all the layers below a certain layer in a comp just draw a mask on a layer, and change its blend mode to “stencil alpha.” If you want to invert the mask use “silhouette alpha.” This works as if the mask was applied to all the layers below the layer it is applied to. I’m also sure there are a million other ways to do this, and this one might not be the best.

That is definatly one way, except to get to see the background layer you will have to precomp this comp and then drop the background below. The other way is of course to drop this comp into a new comp and add a layer mask to the comp layer…..It is really a case of 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other….I would probably use the layer mask in a new comp method….
