    Hello,

I have created several solids with the “Circle” and “Spherize” effect applied to them… I use the two in tandem to create a robotic looking eye… Obviously, I don’t want the pupil to be able to come off of the eye :P, so I want to mask it… Unfortunately, masks can’t be applied to a layer with the circle effect (I found out the hard way), so I created a new black layer that has an inverse mask of the same dimensions of the eye as a whole…

Thankfully, the mask trick worked, but now I can’t add a background layer (or anything under the eye comp) because it gets covered up by the mask solid I made…

    Any help is appreciated!!!

Not sure exactly what you’re trying to do, but generally if you pre-compose (select your layer(s) and hit cmd+shift+C) you should be able to do whatever you want to the layer, like add a mask.

Or just use track matte to use the mask you have already in your black layer and then turn off the visibility for the black layer. This way you can put anything in the back.
