I’ve been trying to figure out if it is posssible to mask a filter applied to a clip in Motion 2 or in FCP, so as it only effects a selected portion of the frame. For instance, say I just want to darken or blur a specific area. Thanks for any advice.

    1. Duplicate the object to be filtered. Apply any animations/behaviors before duplicating it.

    2. Select the upper instance of the object, apply the filter and mask to it.

The trick is to make sure the 2 instances of the object are synchronized and that the upper instance has the masked filtered area.

If you’re going to be applying any complicated moves on the layer, you might want to nest the original & masked layers together, then apply the motions to the nested layer. That way, when you make changes to the move, you only have to apply them to one object.
