  • Masking 16:9 to 2.40:1…

Posted by Sara Iyer on September 23, 2009 at 7:00 pm

    Hey everyone,
My crew is going to be shooting 16:9 anamorphic, and I am going to capture in Avid Symphony as 4:3 and set my monitors to 16:9. They also want me to mask it so the aspect ratio of the frame is 2.40:1. I know I can add a mask to the entire sequence, but does anyone know the scaling width and height I would need on the mask in order to achieve a 2.40:1 aspect ratio from 16:9 footage?

    Thanks!

Usually, people apply a 16×9 mask (.75 V-size) to the 16×9 sequence, so it becomes around 2.35:1.

I pretty much always ask the camera department to shoot a framing guide for me. I use that to determine the exact framing mask.
