Mask Path
Hey guys,
I’m new to this forum so try to bare with me. 🙂
I’m following this tutorial:

(ECG looks like this: https://images.publicradio.org/content/2007/07/17/20070717_electrocardiogram_18.jpg)So, basicly I do as the tutorial says and create a shape with the pen tool and then double click “M” to see the mask options but as soon as I click with the pen tool, I get this new layer called “Shape Layer 1” (this doesn’t happen on the tutorial, I believe it’s CS2).
I’ve spent hours trying to connect the text to a mask path but when I go to the Text Layer’s Path Options, there’s only “None” on the dropdown box.
How can I turn my shape made with pen tool into a mask path, which I can select as the Text Layer’s Path?

I forgot to add that I use After Effects CS3.

Dean’s tutorial was created before shape layers existed in After Effects, so the instructions are a bit different, now that the various tools for drawing paths can be used for either masks or shapes.
Now, to draw a mask on a layer, you have to make sure that the layer is selected first.
You can also copy and paste a shape path to a mask path. The easiest way to do this is to create a dummy mask (for example, by selecting the layer and just clicking once in it with the Pen tool), select the Path property of the shape layer, press Ctrl+C, select the Path property of the mask, and press Ctrl+V.
There’s detailed information about creating shapes and masks and transferring paths from one to the other in the “Creating shapes and masks” section of After Effects Help.
