you’ll need to do one of two things to use a mask…

one way: pre-compose the particular layer. select the particular layer and any layers that it needs (like a custom particle layer or emitter) and choose layer>precompose, choose to ‘move all attributes.’ then you can use a mask on the pre-comp.

the other way: render it out and use the rendered footage as you would any other layer.

you could leave the particular layer in the comp and use a track matte as to create your ‘mask’. to do this create a new layer. create your mask on that layer (you can probably just copy and paste it). move the layer above the particular layer. then from the modes panel in the timeline, set the particular layer to use the new masked layer as a track matte (alpha).

The way I did it for my Texture Pack Promo video is by using an obscuration layer.

Create your mask on a solid layer, then precompose that layer and move attributes to precomp, so the mask is inside the precomp and not applied to it.

Then turn off the visibility of the precomp, and use it as an obscuration layer in particular.

This method works great with 3d layers as well if you need to create a mask that the particles stream around (particles pass in front of, but not behind)

Here is a link to the video, right at 28 seconds is where the particles spray down and get obscured.
