    Hi,

I am trying to draw a house’s blueprints in after effects (so that it essentially builds the house from the ground up.) I imported a picture of a blueprint into illustrator, used live trace, and copied the paths. Then I pasted the paths on a solid in AE and added the stroke effect. It works fine. However, I’d like to have more control over the order that things are drawn in. This presents a problem, because there are 487 masks to sort through, and I really don’t have the time to sort through them. I was wondering if there was a quick and dirty way to have more control over how after effects draws the masks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you select “stroke sequentially” and animate, the masks will be stroked from top to bottom, as they are listed in the timeline. To control the order, shuffle them up and down.

Now … if you want them to appear in a specific order when they come into AE, that would have to be set in Illustrator. Using Illustrator CS, I’ve found that AE lists the masks in the order in which I drew the corresponding paths in Illustrator.

Sadly however, that’s the limit of my usefulness, since I don’t own CS2 and LiveTrace, by extension. Maybe you could ask in an Illustrator forum how to control the order in which LiveTrace draws paths.
