  • Mask Now Working Properly

The Setup: I made a project where a particle explosion occurs. I have made a mask on the layer to stop it from going across the entire screen. The mode is on Add.

My mask doesn’t seem to stop the particles and doesn’t change no matter the mode I choose.

Is there something I forgot or that might need to be changed so that I can stop the particles from going beyond the mask?

I don’t think a mask will effect particles when placed on the actual layer the particles are on.
Try adding the mask to a solid layer above the particle layer and use an alpha track matte.

    Thanks for the reply.

I put up a solid and tried it with the mask and the alpha matte, but it was a no go. I also tried an adjustment layer and the particle layer itself, but neither seemed to worked.

I went ahead and took a different route, but it is unfortunate I could not use the mask as I wanted to.

The only other way that I thought it could work is if I create that layer as a video with an alpha channel and then bring it back into the project and apply the mask. What do you think?

What type of particles are you using?

    Also:
When you tried what I suggested, did you change the particle layer to be an alpha matte with the mask layer directly above it? From your description it seems as though you may have set the actual mask layer to alpha matte, which certainly wont work.

As for your other idea yes it should work but I would try a precomp of your particle effect first. Select your particle layer (and any other layers if the particle effect is using them) Next click, Layer > pre-compose. Choose “move all attributes into the new composition” and click ok. Now you will be able to apply any mask you like to the new precomp layer sitting in place of your particle layer.
