Mask not masking enough in Xpress Pro 4.6
I have some DV.footage, I’ve added a 16:9 mask (yes, it’s masked 16:9, but that’s what i’m after) from the built in effects to the top video track.
I exported it out as a self contained movie using AVID’s own codec, no transcoding needed = no quality loss.
I play back my exported file and I notice 2 things, the mask somehow dont mask the top line of the clip, it contains white jitter, same result as you get when your camcorder overscans. This is very annoying. It’s probably present in some of the video clips, but adding the mask over it, why doesnt it cover it?!?
Then, when viewed on computer monitor the mask is in a broadcast safe black, 16:16:16 or something probably. But on computer it does look gray compaired to
some of the black parts in the movie.Yes I know, the black in the movie is out of (broadcast safe) range but does that really matter since when viewed on a monitor or TV the black in the mask and the black inthe clip looks the same.
The reason why I ask is our masked movie is going to be put on a DVD aswell as be compressed as a movie for the web, and the greyish black mask doesnt look as good on computer. And the white jitter in the topline of the movie is also very noticeable. I know this won’t be viewable on a TV since it will be out of frame, but on computer it looks very ugly!
What I could do is add a mask to my clip (or even crop during encode) with some other app and re-render it, but for a smooth workflow, how do I pull this off in AVID?

Legal broadcast colors and graphic color space are two different things and trying to please two masters… well you know how that goes.
I would suggest you correct all the blacks in the program to be correct, this way a DVD on television is correct. This is black at 16:16:16 (8 bit RGB) and white at 235:235:235 (8 bit RGB).
If you want to create a version for computer viewing, select RGB color in the Quicktime export which will stretch the 16-235 to 0-255. This is helpful for some MPEG2 encoders that expect that range as well as video streaming formats seen on computers. But in doing so, any black detail that was in the 0-16 range before doing this will be gone.
If you just want to have your black bars match, then create your own in PhotoShop with 0:0:0 or use the Title Tool to make the bars as they are 0:0:0.
I don’t know what might be causing the white blanking. Is it over the entire program?

actually it’s the mask who isn’t tight.
I noticed I have a rolling text at the end and it shines thru aswell on top line.
So how do you get the mask tight? Since it doesnt cover the first line in the frame!
