Is there any crazy reason why a mask shouldn’t work properly on a comp that is 3d?

I have a pre-comp within a main comp. Inside the pre-comp is a design that I want to reveal slowly. In the main comp I draw a mask on the pre-comp layer but it’s not masking where I draw, somehow a different part of the layer is being masked; a smaller version of the one I’m drawing, but

There is a camera in the main comp, the pre-comp layer is set to 3d and so is the solid layer within the pre-comp. I’ve tried various combinations of turning 3d layers on and off and either the crazy mask appears or the vector shapes are blurry. However, the blurriness only disappears when I check the ‘continuous rasterization’ option.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

Have you tried pre-rendering the precomp?

Thanks, but I need the flexibility at the moment and don’t want to pre-render. Any idea why this is happening? Is it a bug?

Have you tried applying the mask to the footage in the (2D)precomp rather than
    within the main (3D)comp.
I have had similar problems with masks before which I have solved by applying them
    in 2D space.
    Hope that helps.
