  • Mask is feathering, but feather = 0

I have a video layer as my bottom layer. I duplicated that layer and applied a Fast Blur to it. Then I drew a rectangular mask on the blurred layer. My Mask Feather setting is 0, but the mask is feathering the edge. So instead of a hard edged mask around my blurred video layer, it is a soft feathered edge. I want to avoid using a track matte if possible. I thought a mask would give me the effect I want, but mayber masks can’t crop a blur with a crisp solid edge. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I tried to precomp but that doesn’t work either. I just think masks can’t “mask” a blur. I guess I have to use a track matte.

After Effects default is to render Masks before Effects. So the Mask is applied *then* the blur.

To fix this remove the mask from the blurred layer and pre-compose it, then apply the Mask to the pre-comp.

@Dave, ya beat me to it. Hope you’re not freezing today in the Polar Vortex.

Actually, I misunderstood your suggestion. So the precomping DOES work. I put the blur in the PRECOMP layer, then applied the mask in the second comp and that did the trick. Thanks.
