Mask in DVDA3
I have a bit of a problem, I forgot to put a mask on my video when I rendered it so that stuff between the tv and computer safe views wouldn’t be seen. I was gonna put a black border (using a mask). I didn’t know how to do a mask, and I forgot about doing it. I ended up rendering the video, and I don’t want to re-render it. Is there any way to do the mask in DVDA? If thats possible I’d really appreciate an explination, thanks so much.

There is no way to add a mask without re-rendering.

Thanks for the reply, even if it wasn’t the answer I was hoping for. Would you be able to direct me to a tutorial or explain how to do a mask so that I could make a simple black border throughout my movie. Thanks again.

Just go back to the original project, add a new track to the TOP of the project, add and Empty Event to that track (for the full length of the project), and add a BORDER effect to that empty event. I picked the solid white border and then changed the color to black and it worked fine.

Why would you want to? The ‘safe area’ is arbitrary anyway.

because, if someone were to play the DVD in a computer, they would see that area and the overlap of the video behind it.

And, that’s a problem…. why?
As I said, the safe area is arbitrary anyway so no two TV receivers will be the same.

He said WHY it was a problem. His solution is to make his OWN “safe area” by blacking out what he doesn’t want people to see.
The alternate solution would be to only use full screen where “off the screen” was the safe area. However, that might chop some things off when viewing on a TV.
I agree that it’s somewhat arbitrary what you use for the safe area. In this case, he simply had some things that were visible in some circumstances that he did not want visible in any circumstance. Hiding them is a very viable solution (especially if it meant re-editing the entire project).
Now… for future projects…

So, for future projects, what would u recommend? Using the entire space (even the safe area), keeping in mind not to put anything important there because it will get chopped off on TV?

Yes. That is how I work. Assume the entire is going to be seen but keep all “important” part inside the real safe area.

Chase – This is all that the safe area is. It’s a guide – nothing more.
