  • MASK – How to create a 4:3 Aspect Mask

Posted by Craig Harris on December 8, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Can anyone help me figure out how to create a 4:3 mask in Photoshop which I can then import into DaVinci?

I can’t seem to create a mask with a 4:3 cutout that appears correctly in Resolve.
Maybe I am doing something wrong in PS???

Did you take the non-square pixels into consideration?

    I’m not working with a 4:3 project.
I am wanting to stylize a couple of shots to appear as 4:3. That’s why the need for a 4:3 layover mask that will act like a crop.

I just don’t know how to create the mask file correctly.

Why not build it with the resolve blanking.

I believe I just wrote something about this recently ?

Here’s howto in a few quick and dirty steps:

  • Make a document with the same resolution and pixel aspect ratio you’ll be using
  • Marquee tool
  • Make it work in FIXED ASPECT mode
  • Type 4:3
  • Now, click and drag from top left to bottom right, and you’ll get a 4:3 selection
  • New layer, fill layer with black, select all (cmd+a) and center the layer
  • CMD+click the thumbnail of your layer to select the 4:3 square you made.
  • Invert selection and fill with black. Disable the previous layer.
  • You should now have a 4:3 pillar box..

input or output blanking on the resolve should do the trick.. No photochop needed.

Can you apply blanking though to just a handful of clips? Doesn’t blanking affect the entire timeline?

Checking the mac now.. On the linux system I can build presets that can be applied on a shot to shot basics.. Seem the mac may be missing that function or its in the panels.

I came up with a few work arounds.

In track mode you can add marks and yes apply blanking / mattes shot to shot. .
Another easy workaround is to create a single node draw your 4×3 shape inverse and take the vaules to black.. This can be dropped on any clip that needs the matte.
