Here is what I want to do. I have a mask I drew with the pen tool with the stroke effect applied that creates a border for a lower third text animation. The border is of the trapezoidal persuasion. On top of that border I have created a single mask line for the top part of the border and another for the bottom part of the border. With those single line masks, I applied the stroke effect to make a short, bright highlight that runs along the border and looks shiny.

Now, people’s names are of different length. I want to be able to resize the border mask and the hightlighted borders at the same time with one fell swoop. And since my top and bottom borders are precomped (to allow for a time remapped loop), how can I tie them all together?

Can I use the pick whip to select only one side of the mask? Help help.

Masks cannot be tied to expressions and neither can text layers be accesed in a manner that allows to read their absolute dimnesuion (in pixels) easily. Your setup is more or less non-automatable.
