Mask Alignment for Track Matte Key
Hi,
I have three video/photo layers. The bottom two are almost identical still photos, but the top is a blurred (gaussian) and the bottom is clear. I am using a third, very top layer with the letters of my production company as a Track Matte (key).
The video should work so that the letters allow the very bottom clear photo layer to show through the middle blurred photo layer. The only part of the very bottom layer that shows through is the shape of the letters in the top layer. The top layer of letters acts as a mask.The track matte key kind of works [just kind of] – but the letters in the top layer are placed in the center/bottom of the screen – YET – what’s masked or what part of the bottom layer shines through are the letters but in the top part of the screen.
I have two pictures here that show this problem. ScreenShot1 shows how the mask is working. You can see the letters ‘AIC’ in the top part of the screen. ScreenShot2 shows when I removed the track matte key effect, where the letters in the top layer are really positioned.

I don’t get it – I want the mask created by the track matte key – to be exactly and only where I place the letters on the top layer.I think that is how the track matte key effect is supposed to work.
Any thoughts as to why the mask is not in the correct position? The top layer is simply a title layer with some thick letters. PLEASE don’t suggest I adjust where the letters are really positioned by “guessing” where I want the mask.
I want to understand why the mask is offset from where the letters are truly positioned as I see them in the very top layer.

What size are the photos? Are they the same dimension as your comp or are the just resized and positioned? Try the layout again with everything scaled to frame size.

What I did was use photoshop to resize the photos to 1920 x 1080 before I put them into the into the premeire project. Both the blurred photo and the clear photo is resized the exact same.The top mask layer is a title, I made in Premiere.
Do you think premiere is trying to resize them?

I tried what you said. I set all 3 layers to ‘Scale to Frame Size’ – the same results.Somehow the position of the title as far as what layer 3 shows, is not what the Track Matte Key effect is using to create the mask. I can’t figure out why the mask is not where the text shows it should be. What ever happened to WYSIWYG……
Any help would be appreciated!!

Check the position and or scale properties in Motion of the image in track two.

Yes…. Thank You Ann. Actually I figured it out late last night. Or was that early this morning.
What I did was use the motion effect to zoom in on me in the both the still photos. Both = the clear one on the bottom and blurry one above it.
Somehow…. those key frames and setting must be identical between the two layers — otherwise the track matte key effects are off.
HHhhhmmm is there a way to copy a set of key frames as a group and paste them into another layer?

The order in which effects are processed might be causing you a problem. Track mattes do NOT like motion (unless the motion is in a nested sequence).
Use Transform instead of Motion and your problem may be resolved.

I tried Transform Camera View. It’s let me zoom, but not to zoom in on an object in my still photo. Not that I have a big ego… but the idea was to zoom in on myself in the picture.
I tried putting the image in a sequence, and Track Matte Key effect on the sequence, but the result is the same.
Pretty lame effects…. I did this in Sony Vegas.

oooOHHHHhh….. why would they design track matte key to mask different if the layers below are moving or zooming

Not Transform: Camera View”. Just Transform. It is in the Distort menu.

Yes, that would be nice, but it isn’t how it works. Why? Beats me! I just know that to get around it you either use Transform instead of Motion, or you create you track matte sequence and then nest it.
