  • Mask a PLANE object — Boole or Spline Mask?

Thank you in advance for hopefully a simple solve. I’m working with a plane object that has PolyFX applied to it then a random effector (think mosaic effect) splitting the plane into many pieces. I’m hoping to make that plane into a shape other than a plane using a mask of some sort. I did have success putting an alpha channel mask in the texture of the plane but not exactly what I’d like, as I’d really like to use a spline mask and gradually move the shape mask into position over the plane.

Making any sense? Masking a plane object with a boole or a spline mask rather than an alpha would be awesome.

    cheers and thank you.

I think the best way to do it is with the Bool object. The problem with spline mask is that it generates a new object every time you move one of the splines, so your pieces would be popping all over the place.

But you can use a boolean object and it’s surprisingly spritely. The object order would be:

Boolean Object (set to A subtract B)
    >Plane
    >>PolyFX
    >Cutting Object

Thanks Adam, I think I’m there. Worked well. It dawned on me with A subtract B that I need to create a reverse mask to contain my imagery within not without so I think this is the most efficient solve.

    cheers and thanks again.
