marking time (segments) in a video during playback.
Hello I am looking for a solution for a situation where i have a video (after effects composition) and i want to be able to play video and sometimes hit a keyboard button to mark segments. I know there are markers in timeline, but that disrupts the flow of viewing video, in order to use timeline markers i have to stop playback. I am looking for a solution to mark segments during playback, preferably inside after effects. any ideas are welcome

I don’t know if you can do it in AE, but you can in Premiere. So I would just open the composition in Premiere, play it and just tap “M” where you need markers. Only workaround I know.

You can use numpad *
That will leave a marker either in the comp if no layer is selected or on a layer that is selected. -

I’m a little flumoxed, because before I posted my answer, I tried to use the Num Key * and it didn’t work for me. I saw Chris’s replay, and I just started AE again, and tried again and it is working for me. It might that my first project was too complicated to playback in realtime, not sure. But Chris is right and you should be able to use his approach.

Wow all the years I’ve been using AE and never ever heard of this keyboard command.
I don’t usually mark actual video clips but time to time it would be great when reviewing mograph comps.
