Marking IN and OUT points on multiple clips…
Posted by David Battistella on June 15, 2015 at 9:33 pmThis one should be easy. I have rendered resolve clips with 12 frame handles and now want to insert that media onto an existing timeline. There is a bug in resolve XML that conforms an R3D clip to it’s original size rather than the rendered size of the timeline forcing a sequence to want to render.
So basically I want to select all my clips in the browser, mark an in 12 frames into the clip and an out 12 frames before the end of the clip. This way I can drag it over the existing sequence, line it up and overwrite and not have to render the whole thing again.
Is there a way to select all of the clips and mark an in 12 frames into each clip?
I might save me having to do 300+ clips manually trimming each one.

It doesn’t answer the trim question, but it may be a solution for you.

June 15, 2015 at 10:56 pmTo answer the question directly, here’s how to do the trims in FCP X. Assuming the clips can be sorted in the correct sequential order, then select all and edit them to a timeline. Then in the timeline, follow these steps:
1. Select all, select duration and enter -12. This trims the out point 12 frames.
2. Select all, pick retime and reverse clip. Now all clips are in the -100% mode.
3. Select all, select duration and enter -12. This trims the in point 12 frames.
4. Select all and reverse clips again. This puts the clips back in the right direction.– Oliver

You’re still rendering on output. The FCPXML is based on 4K source resolution. So if you exported from Resolve at 1080 timeline resolution, the FCPXML is telling FCP X that the clips are 4K, even though they are 1080. Whether or not this render is actually noticeable is unknown (at least by me).

David, if you send over your XML, I’ll take a look.
Another thing to do would be to shift-f then shift-r on every clip in the timeline to match frame and then replace from start.

Washing it through Resolve a second time fixes it as well, as long as you are on the same machine (per our previous adventure).

I think I can figure it out now after these excellent suggestions.
I attacked it a few ways yesterday.
It might make sense to try to import the XML into resolve, relink it to the Rendered clips. In FCP X the resolve XML carries the R3D clip names in the timeline. Thus, i believe FCP X thinks it is dealing with 5K Clips instead of the rendered media, even though when you link the media in the finder it recognizes the rendered clip as the source. On short timelines, this is no biggie but on longer ones avoiding the render is preferred from a disk space and time perspective.
Still, something this basic should work pretty easily. Maybe it has something to do with XML 1.4.
Shane, I could try to send you the XML, and I will if I don’t work this out quickly. I’ve posted/reported this in the Blackmagic DaVinci support forum community but have not heard anything back in that thread.
If I view the XML using mayflies from spherico the timeline carries the R3D name but it is linking to the rendered media correctly, so I think it has something to do with how FCP X is reading the original source clip and resolution.
Then again, if I create a new sequence and drop a rendered clip into it, no problem, if I copy paste from the old sequence, NOGO. parameters are all exactly the same except in the FCP inspector where the the source is 5K RED material and I suspect that information is being passed along through the FCP X chain.
If I edited the XML to make the source names match, I suspect that there would be no issue, because a change in PROJECT/timeline resolution has no effect.

June 16, 2015 at 12:43 pmIt has nothing to do with the names. All of that is controlled in the XML. You can have a up name with r3d and have it point to a .mov as the source. Since everything is pointing to the correct media, you’re OK.
What you would have to change is the reference size to each asset. If you notice in the XML, there’s a bunch of formats and a bunch of assets. Each of the assets gets referenced to a format ID number. If you either change all the format sizes to 1080 or change the reference is to an ID that contains 1080, save the XML and reimport, you should be fine.
Resolve seems to be writing some very weird XMLs, as Oliver and I found out last week.
