June 1, 2005 at 12:59 pmWe looked at this unit but found the mic pres to be too noisy for the work we do.
But at under $500.00 what do you expect.You must be recording something very loud to use the -20db setting.
What microphones were you using?
Also, did you use a multi-meter on the mic cable to verify that phantom power goes completly away with the pad engaged
or that the voltage dips? -

I use 2 MKH 40.
I heard that Marantz had problems with the PreAmps pad in former Series.

June 2, 2005 at 1:08 pmIf I remember correctly, the Sennheiser MKH 40 has a pad switch.
You might use it instead of the pad on the Marantz. -

June 2, 2005 at 8:15 pmMarantz is aware of this problem and will update the defective firmware under the warranty. I just sent my unit in and now it doesn’t distort until it gets above -6db and the -20db pad has been fixed. It was actuallly set at -40db before. I am much happier with the unit now.
