I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but hopefully its okay to inquire here. I am making a wildlife documentary on Australia and will need to use a few maps of the area. I would zoom in on certain states of Australia to give viewers an idea of the area being traveled etc. I am unclear if I would be doing something illegal if I simply took my video camera and zoomed in on various parts of a map I purchased such as Hema maps. If this would be illegal can anyone suggest some alternatives that wouldnt be too costly?

    Thanks!

    Don

My guess is that anything you purchased will be copyrighted.

I just looked and your government website does have maps available.
They’re free for personal/in-house use only though.
Commercial use requires permission and the link is provided.
They don’t say if there’s a fee so you’d have to ask.

Your national library is another map resource that may be free.
Once again, be sure to ask permission as this is a commercial project.

I use maps in my videos. These companies spend a LOT of money to produce the maps, and while they will usually give you (written) permission to use them for free if it’s just a quick clip, they will be really upset if you don’t get permission.
