Mapping effects to gradient in FCP

To create a Gradient blur:

Top Layer- Video Clip
Mid Layer – Gradient ( This can be found in the Viewer, Click on the A in the Filmstrip button, Go to Render, Choose Gradient.)
Bottom Layer – Same Clip with a Blur.

This will create a gradient for your blur. Hope this helps.

You also need to set the composite mode on the top clip to “Track matte Luma”.
