So i’m buildig a zoom in from outer space into a clients building. I know this has been talked about on here before but i haven’t found anything addressing my problem. I’m using screen shots from google maps. I’ve arranged them all so they all match. I’m getting hung up on the actual zoom. The stills shrink exponentially. layer 1 is scaled half of layer 2 and layer 2 is half of layer 3. this makes sense to create the full composite. however when zooming, say the zoom goes from 100 down to 1. It takes 100-80 to go one still then 80-70 to go another then 70-65 to do another. So the zoom is exponential as well. I was thnking precomp it and zoom on the precomp but then the resoluion is lost. Does this make sense. Any ideas? oh yeah and a camera does the same exponential thing. i’m out of ideas. thanks

I think i just solved it so don’t fret if anyone cares. I just manually key framed a zoom that is exponential by the same value of the scale between images.

Im not good at this, but could one way be to parent all the images? Cind of creating one big picture and then scale?

I have parented them. I have like 10 stills. i scaled them all to fit within eachother then parent them all to a null layer. and use the scale of the null layer to create the zoom. everything looks great except the zoom since each layer is twice as large as the one on top of it, it takes longer to zoom the further out you are and less to zoom the closer in you are. the result is starting on your start still ie the world then on the next frame already being zoomed into about state level. The exponential zoom i created worked somewhat the zoom was all the same time length, but since there were numerous key frames it looked steppy. i’m still trying to figure this out, if anyone has any ideas. I know i’ve read stuff on here before about world wind and other stuff but i’m using all stills the detail is really nice in what i have built it’s just the actual zoom.

That’s really creepy that you posted this question only about 4 hours after I posted mine. For me, the AE zoom ended up being the easy part. (the hard part is becoming coordinating the transition to the maya sequence). For the zoom, I’m just buying 3 images from digital globe of the same location, from different altitudes. Then, in AE, I just put them all in a comp, turn on their 3D, and stack them barely different on the z axis so that they are in the correct order. (i.e. don’t leave them all at 0.) I’ve scaled the top one (closest to the ground) to something like .05% (this happens to actually be a live footage plate, but could easily be an overhead shot of your client’s building) and the largest view to a gazillion percent. Then, I just took a camera and pulled back on the z axis (I’m pulling away in my shot). Viola. No need for fancy expressions.

oh, p.s. It sounds like it would be copyright infringement for you to use the Google images that way. I called them. Don’t loose professional cred or your shirt trying to play the “everybody’s doing it” game. You’ll need to go to their provider and buy them from them for $105 apiece. Try this url:
    https://imageatlas.globexplorer.com/ImageAtlas/view.do?group=digitalglobe&lat=39.5276&lon=-97.142&zoom_level=1

Post a sample when done if you can.

so i figured it out. right in front of my face in keyframe assistant. there is a thing called exponetial scale. it takes your first and last scale key frame and fills in the middle exponentially. looks good and smooth now. I’m not worried about rights with google. it’s one of those crappy meeting videos for the new year. just to be seen at a meeting and that’s it. if anyone is interested just use google maps find the place you want zoom in all the way do screen grabs of each interval of the zoom control on the side of the screen. throw it into AE each still is 50% of the previous one, line up the edges so they match. parents them all to a null object. set the anchor point. set your first keyframe all the way out, zoom in to the ground set that key frame then select both keyframes>keyframe assistant>exponential scale. pretty easy and tight looking without the hassle of spending hours on lining up each shot. that took the least amount of time.
