  • Many questions about P2 workflow!

I’m new to P2 – actually, I’ve never used the camera or the format. I am intrigued at the possiblity of never buying acquisition tape again! I’m toying with a workflow, and I’d like to get some feedback.
As background, we do everything from speeches and classroom events to high end broadcast work that winds up as b-roll for national media and finished events for PBS. Our end products make P2 and the HVX so impressive. We currently shoot DVCPro50 tape for the majority of our products, but use DV as well. Our edit systems consist of Avid XPress Pro HD 5.5 and a Mac Meridian v12 on OS 10.2.6

My thought is to outfit everyone with an HVX, tripod, and a Firestore. Much like a still guy, the videographer would come back from a shoot, select the best clips, transfer those clips to shared storage. Editors would then pull those clips, edit and output whatever format the customer wants. We’d archive this clips to to another storage system.

    Questions:

-Any problems with continuous recording (55 minutes) in the P2 format?
-I’m probably going to upgrade our Meridian to an Adrenaline or SDI Mojo PC system, but in the meantime, can the Mac OSX Avid system be included in this workflow?
-Can After Effects use the files directly off a P2 card?
-Most of the problems I’ve seen in this forum seem to be transferring between FCP and the Avid. Any problems associated with Avid and the P2 format – it’s MXF, not OMF, correct?
-How are you guys archiving/backing up your material?
-We’ll be using the cameras (obviously) in a field environment. Any recomendations on protective camera bags?
-How are you mounting the Firestore to the camera? How about securing the FW cable to avoid inadvertent disconnects?

Do you guys see any problems / issues with this workflow?

Sorry about all the questions, but I want to get this right!

    Thanks in advance…

    Jon

Firestore FS100 will record continuous. P2 cards are hot swappable, and Cineporter, another DTE solution will be released next year.

AE will not read the mxf data directly from the cards.

I’ve archiving to removable SATA drives on a Mac Pro.

Bunch of protective bag choices out there.

There are always issues with workflow – probably better to ask directly because different workflow presents different issues.
