I have a shot of a man looking down at his hands, and I’m trying to use After Effects to convey that his soul is leaving his body through his hands. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could show this? I envisioned whispy tendrils of ethereal matter flowing out of his fingers, but I am not really sure how to accomplish that. I would really really appreciate any advice anyone could give.

if its possible to shoot from a different angle against green screen then you can just play with all types of transparency and masks.
    that could be costly though.
the cheap route will take a ton of tweaking.
basically animate using distort, blur, particles and warps (whatever it takes) for the wispy looking entity leaving the body.

Look into particles, blurs and composite modes.

Use Particular to create a nice flow of particles (google tutorials on smoke or water with Particular), then set a few Lights as Emitters and animate them spiraling around the hands. Play with masks and particle opacity to create the illusion of the flow coming from within and going around the hands.
