Managing media question: multiplication of files…
I’m using FCP 10.5.2 on an iMac, working with material that originated as videotapes. Most of the tapes became single AVI files, up to 30 GB in size. I started by creating FCP Libraries, each of which contained the file(s) from one videotape.
But now I’m creating projects that use files sourced from multiple tapes. Also, with some files being used in multiple projects, I now have a growing collection of duplicate optimized files in various libraries. As a result, storage space is an issue, because of the duplicates, in addition to the original AVI files. I guess building one huge library would make it easy to share the files between projects, but such a massive library doesn’t seem like a good idea.
Clearly, I should have asked for help organizing earlier! On top of everything else, I already have a bunch of finished projects, and so don’t want lose edit information as a result of whatever reorganizing I do. I thought the solution could be storing optimized video files outside of the libraries. But I don’t see how to re-link those files with the the existing, already edited projects.
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thanks!
