Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Making the switch to Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere Pro?

I am finding the same problem on our 8 core Mac Pro with 24 Gb of RAM, Premiere Pro totally drags, playback is horrible with native AVCHD. We are trying to quickly process lectures adding in PPT slides titles and what not, and it is such a pain in the neck.

With AVID it also doesn’t seem to like AVCHD, so I am experimenting with an AVID Workflow where we do a transcode from the get go since we aren’t going to be cutting more than a few minutes of the video off of the final product.

Once again any updates are welcomed.

AVCHD should be transcoded. We are transcoding that format when we run into it.

    Hi All!

I just wanted to update whoever may be interested…
I gradually have made the switch to Premiere Pro and LOVE it. There are so many improvements over Final Cut Pro, (which really improved only slightly over the 10 years I used it.)
I feel that, as others have noted, switching from Final Cut to Premiere is a much more intuitive switch than to Avid, although I recognize that Avid has many amazing things to offer.

I was also really helped in making my decision by the idea that if I am someone who does a lot of “start to finish” projects in post, especially motion graphics, Premiere is a great option for me, and it is.

I am still trying to get used to the color correction in Premiere though, and am really interested in trying SpeedGrade!

    Hi,

I’m also wondering if someone like walter biscardi is still on PP or did he switch to AVID? And what about Autodesk Smoke?
I started editing many years ago on MEDIA100 and than switched to FCP version 1.2, so I’ve got about 12 years editing experience with FCP.

I’ve been testing everything and my findings are:
PP: ok, fast, but somehow not as smooth as FCP7 (specially with audio) and I don’t like it’s ‘cluttered’ look, also I’ve got green flashes now and then in the final rendered products.
AVID: Solid but a kind of old fashioned. Steep learning curve Not good for special FX like speeding up footage etc. In my opinion at best as in ‘straight editing’.
FCPX: Looks very good, steep learning curve, extremely stable (never had a crash), easy to give your edits a modern look, magnetic timeline is brilliant, quicker than any other editing program… until you have to mix you’re audio… that is a terrible mess and that’s the moment where you will loose all the time you just won…

    So… what are your findings?

    Cheers,

I have been using FCP for 12 years now. I recently have made the switch to Premiere Pro. Although I like the features the mimic FCP, I’m still kicking and screaming a bit. I use AE so the switch seemed logical. I’ve always wondered about Avid because many folks in broadcast are still using it as staple. I’ve lost a gig or 2 because I wasn’t versed in Avid. But I do mostly web work for corporations and advertising and some local TV as well. I’m hopeful about Premiere Pro. But being an apple snob, I totally transitioned kicking and screaming. But I have been happy with the commentary by Adobe folks who are chiming in to the posts. It feels good to know they want the business and are looking out for the professional user. I’m wondering now where to go from here? Do I need to go even further into a Windows 8 system with Adobe or hope that Apple will continue to upgrade the Mac Pro. Any thoughts on this? I can purchase a 16 core PC tower with 64GB of RAM for a fraction of the cost… but I’m also using Thunderbolt via a LaCie hub to eSata on my mac.. What are you all thinking about hardware in the future?

Adobe Premiere is much similar to FCP 7 then Avid. I even think that the Premiere Pro CS6 is what FCP 8 should be like.

Easy to transfer. Use Lynda.Com to learn how. Easy.
