Making the switch
Hey guys,
I’m fed up with CS4, Windows 7 and the constant problems I’m having and have decided to jump the FCP and Mac. My machine has:
12 gigs of RAM
Core i7 processor 920
Three 750 gig hard drives
5850 hd graphics cardI’m wondering what would be best for my situation; reformatting and running OS X on my machine or buying a decent quad-core iMac. I’m looking for reliability and simplicity above everything else.

If you’re looking for reliability, then you need a Mac to run OS X. I know there are stories of everything working great on non-Apple hardware, but inevitably you will run into an issue. Trust me.
Outside of the legal issue, you can’t just update without potential problems. When updates come out, they can break the system.
Simplicity and reliability…OS X on Mac.
As for the Quad-core iMac, as far as I know they don’t have an express card slot. That limits using certain hardware, but probably only an issue for video editing and hardware interfaces.
They are really cool. I’ve set one up for a friend.

One of our systems uses a Matrox MXO2 I/O box that connects via a PCIe card for desktops and an express card adapter for portable systems.
The larger MacBook Pro for example has an express card slot so we can use the Matrox box on that system from time-to-time.
You can still edit without it, but you lose the option of higher end hardware options.
That’s all.

I was a devoted Windows/PC user…until I was able to get a Mac.

Me too, I’m actually still slightly reluctant to switch to Mac. I love lots of stuff about PC and Windows 7 seems to be pretty great. I was initially trained on Mac and I think it will just be a lot better fit.
I’m guessing you’ve been fairly happy with Mac since you made the jump 🙂 -
Completely happy.
But it is hard to justify the cost, especially now since Windows 7 is looking WAY better than Vista.
My original switch was due to a need to run Final Cut Pro. Everything fell into place from there.

I am happily running Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio on a PC that formerly ran XP. Once it is installed, there is very little difference.
