Good morning,I need a little direction on moving from my SD set up
    to a HD set up.
    here’s my existing set up….

    Vista Home Premium 32 bit
    Sony Vegas Pro 8 8.0c Build 260

    MY PC (desktop)
    Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Company
    Model d4790y
    Rating 5.0 Windows experience Index
Processor Intel(R) Core (TM) 2 CPU 2.6 GHZ
    Memory(RAM) 4.00 GB
System type 32 – bit operating system

would like to upgrade to the following…
Pioneer BDR 206 12x blu ray burner
    Windows 7 home premium 32-bit or 64 bit ???
Is this the direction i need to go ??

Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you forum!!

You don’t say what format HD you are planning, but since most consumer cameras are shooting some version of AVCHD…

Realize that AVCHD files are very compressed. The only bulwark against the massive compression in AVCHD is sheer bone crushing-processor power and blazing fast disk throughput.

Your PC is probably inadequate to edit native AVCHD, so you will probably be using an intermediate, like Cineform.

Thanks Steve for your response, for the moment we are shooting with a Canon Vixia HV 30, which would be HDV. If possible we would like to keep this PC set up for a while because of cost reasons.
If you have any cost-effective PC suggestions let us know,Look forward to your response, thanks.

I would definitely go with Windows 7 64-bit so that you can take advantage of your 4GB of RAM. That computer meets minimum specs for HDV so it should be fine. As Stephen said, don’t plan on buying an AVCHD camera unless you also plan to upgrade to a Quad Core or Hex Core PC.

Yes John, I thought my PC would be okay for HDV, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. One last question though, will I have to get a full version of Windows 7 home premium 64-bit, or can I just do an upgrade from Vista home premium?

You will need to perform a clean installation since you cannot directly upgrade/convert from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems (or vice versa).

You can run the Windows 7 Upgrade compatibility checker to see if any of your components/applications require updating or are not supported.

    Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
