Anyone got any advice about tweaking some particles?

At the moment I’ve got some Illustrator files of snowflakes. These I’ve got cascading down the screen which look great. However, it would be good to have them at random sizes, as there’s too much of a uniformity to them at the moment.

I have four of the snowflakes and its very noticeable that each type is the same size.
Is it possible in Particle Playground to randomise the generated particles?

The only way I’ve found so far is to duplicate both the PPG layer and layer Map, reduce the amount of particles generated, and resize the layer Map to create a variety. But this obviously creates more layers and loads more redner time.

i believe you will need to use multiple particle systems, changing the size of the particles and rate that the fall and perhaps darken them or adjust the opacity.

you might also look at cc particle world. it comes with any of the ae pro’s for the last several versions. it’s a 3d particle system and it can produce more realistic particles. you can set a custom particle by setting the particle type to any ‘textured’ choice (like textured disc, etc) and then choosing the texture layer.

search the archives for ‘snow’ and ‘particle world,’ i had respnded to a post about a month ago for creating a snow effect. i don’t believe that they were looking for a custom particle, but the other settings should help you get started.

one note, you are limited to just one particle texture per system. since you have 4 flakes, put them all into a 4 frame comp, having just one flake per frame. bring that comp into a new comp, select layer>time>time remapping. then option-click (or alt-click, pc) the stopwatch and type ‘loopOut()’ in the expression field. extend the layer as far as needed. set texture time to ‘birth’.

now you should get all 4 different snowflakes in one system.

Do you know how to have text dissolve into snow?

The text would start out in a solid state, then after [x] amount of time, it crumbles/dissolves into snow. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
