Making pic smaller w/black border
Posted by John Gregoriades on December 17, 2008 at 8:12 amHi again,
I’m trying to add a short poor quality video into a Vegas timeline. It’s so poor that I’d like to reduce it in size so as to look small, perhaps half the size of the screen (without cropping it) and surround it by a thick black border to fill out the rest of the screen.
I haven’t figured out how to do this yet. It must be part of the “Event Pan Crop” and/or the “Event Effects” controls.
Some guidance would be appreciated.
Many thanks,

December 17, 2008 at 8:20 amYou can use the track motion to make it the size you desire and you’ll have a black background. You can make any color border you’d like by adding another track below it, right click on the time line and select generated media, then solid color. All you have to do then is pan/crop the image to fit your video. Hope this helps.

December 17, 2008 at 8:57 amThank you Joe, this is very helpful. I tried it. One question more: The track motion appears to affect, somehow, the entire track, not just the particular clip on that track. It does not change the size of the other clips, but in some cases, where I already have a black background, it changes it into a different shade of black.
Should I place the clip that I want to reduce, onto a separate video track, and apply the track motion to that track only?John23GR

December 17, 2008 at 4:57 pmThe track motion will affect the entire track unless you keyframe it not to. So if you do not want to do that then yes place your video on a separate track and then only that will be affected.
If I understand you correctly you are getting a different shading of the black border on the track you have resized the clips. How did you create the border? The way I suggested in the prior post is the easiest way to do it. But is you are oging to have a black border and then resize the clip you will no longer have a definable border as it will blend in. I would suggest not having a black border unless you use a white background. It would look better to stay with the black and use a white border instead. Or if you want to get a little more fancy use the Border FX and add that to your clip.

Sorry for my late response; occasionally real world situations get in the way of my fun hobby.
All is working well by following your suggestions. I found it easier to use a separate video track.

December 20, 2008 at 3:30 pmUnderstand that completely, I’m glad it worked out. It is always good to learn what the final solution was. There are an unlimited number of scenarios and this is the best place to share those so we all can learn a little more.
