making it appear as if a car squashes a guy
hi all-
watching a demo from rodriguez about how to make it appear as if a guy is squashed between two cars. he locks off the camera then rolls footage as a guy runs towards the back of a parked car, changes his mind and darts back towards the front.
next, with the camera and car in exactly the same spot, he rolls footage of a cadillac roaring into fram and smashing into the parked car. now he marries the two pieces of footage- and you see the guy run towards the back of the car- the second car roars into frame and as the guy darts back towards the front of the parked car- the cadillac smashes into the parked car and squishes the running guy.
no cuts. both pieces of footage joined and creating this great effect!
HOW? is it done with a traveling matte? and if so, which piece of footage?
gonna do a test and see if i can duplicate this- but i’d love any help you care to throw out there.

Um, not seeing the shot I don’t know if they do a swap with a CG dummy or just a live one, but that’s all it would be. Your going to do a verticle wipe on the footage of the car driving in (using a mask that is animated. Then at the point of impact you going to switch over to the car hitting the other car footage only and then the rest is animated (as in the guy, falling down / cutting in half? .. don’t know) .. but that’s all it is, hope that helps .. and I’m sure there is a few other ways of solving it 🙂

it’s not a dummy. it’s the two pieces of footage. check out “once upon a time in mexico”- the shot appears in that film.

reading over your reply again- i’m sorry- i dont really understand what you’re saying.
both pieces of footage are playing at the same time-
#1. footage shows the guy running to the back of the car then changing his mind and running to the front.
#2. shows the car racing into frame as he runs and now hitting pinning him as the cars collide.
it’s as if they are married the whole time- not just at impact. -
um, well since it’s a locked off shot. You basically have 2 identical shots with one new element in each. The person in shot 1 and the car in shot 2. What your going to do is place the footage of the car on the top layer and the person footage on the bottom. Then your going to create a mask that cuts out the car coming into the shot (it can be loose but the front of the car is where you will want to spend the most time). Then as they play you’ll see the footage underneath and just the car from the footage ontop and it’ll look like that car is in that scene. .. hope that makes sense.
I havn’t seen the film so I don’t know the shot, but I might have a look .. hope it helps.
