  • Making clones of Varicam Footage

    Hi,

We need to make some backup copies of a bunch of tapes that were shot on a Varicam. The original tapes contain footage that was shot at 24 and 60fps. We need to maintain all of that functionality with the dubs in case we use these for a redigitize. We’ve got a HD130 deck and have noticed that everything it records as layoff from FCP or direct from the Varicam seems to only playback (and capture correctly in FCP) at 59.94. Is there a way to utilize our HD130 as either a playback or record deck so that the original tapes frame rate settings are preserved? I think we will be renting a 1200 as our second deck. So I guess in summary, is it possible to make clones of tapes that maintain the frame rate flags with a HD130 and a 1200, or with any combo of decks for that matter?

    Thanks.

The flags you speak of are a combination of timecode and userbits. If neither of these are copied exactly to the new tapes, then you’ll have problems.

In order to carry frame speed information to clones (which is vital as you already know interms of using the clone for speed effects of import into 24p project) you have to make sure that the user bits are read and rerecorded on the copy deck. I believe this is a menu function on both these units!

The term “cloning” then should be reserved then for fw copying from 1200/1400 to another 1200/1400.
