Making a head explode (special effects)
Hey guys, Im working in Final Cut Express not FCP, but i have to post anyways. I’m trying to make a person’s head explode on screen from a bullet. The shot is simply a profile of a guy from the side, shoulders up. I need his head to explode from a digital bullet. I have shots of the background behind him with the same camera positioning too which i imagine would be neccesary for his body there without a head. What would you guys use? I have photoshop too if it would be needed, all in all the head exploding can be as little as 15 or so frames. Thanks!!!

Since you have the background plate it would be relatively simple to blow off the head completely and leave it on a smoking neck than to blow it up. Blowing it of would simply require a loud sound effect to make the audience blink, a quick cut in mask to mask out the head, a particle effect for the smoke and a bit of painting for some jagged edges and a little blood around the edges.

THere used to be a sweet tutorial that was here on the cow for a day or so, but taken down mysteriously. Following Andrew Kramer’s link that was mentioned above might take you there. you will need After Effects to complete it.

sound effect, mask off the head and replace it with a free exploding styrofoam head clip from here: https://www.detonationfilms.com/UnitK.htm
better yet buy one of their “eggsplosions” too and add it to the mix 🙂have fun

Stick a camera in a room full of editors… and start them talking about aspect ratios. Eventually someone’s head will explode. Job done.
