  • Making a 3d rotating dodgeball…

Posted by Chrisyocum on November 16, 2006 at 7:43 pm

What I ultimately want to achieve is to have a 3d globe rotating on its axis that morphs into a dodgeball rotating in the same manner. I already have the rotating 3d earth, and a 2d picture of a dodgeball. How can I make the dodgeball appear to be rotating on its axis? Is there a way to easily transform this flat photo into a 3d image with depth, that could rotate? Any ideas would be appreciated, I have AE 7 Pro and Photoshop at my disposal, thanks.

My first instinct was CC sphere, and i created one, but am not sure how to get the texture from the picture transferred to the sphere. My instincts here suggest Texturize (seems obvious), but in my initial attempts this didn’t work.

You need a 2:1 (spherical texture map, methinks) image of the skin of a dodgeball (like you peeled it and made it square).

If you can find one online, great. If I had to make one I think I’d create the 2:1 image in PhotoShop (say 1400×700 pixels) and then I find a pattern I like and fill the layer.

Then you can go get this cool Freebie and make your own spherical texture map, the plugin compensates.

Thanks for the advice. I thought it would be a workflow something like this, but was at a loss. That plug in sounds like just what I was missing. Thanks again.
