Making 1080I HDV into 1080P in FCP7 Sequence
Is it possible to record 1080I footage with the Sony Z1U and import it into FCP7 making the seguence settings 1440×1080 24p (to match the specs of the 24p Sony Z7U) then output the sequence to a Sony Z7U camera? If it works, would the footage look noticeably different then the 1440×1080 24p footage from a Z7U? Has anyone out there done this? I believe there would not be alot of rendering because the frame size is the same, but I could be wrong. Thanks for any help or advice

HDV doesn’t use square pixels – that’s why the apparent discrepancy in frame size. Trust FCP. Just turn on the “Prompt for settings on new sequences” option in FCP’s User prefs. Let FCP interpret this and simply say yes to the conform.
If you want to save time rendering don’t edit in HDV. Capture it as ProRes instead. If you’ve shot 1080, then choose ProRes 4:2:2 at 1080… etc.. match the frame rate. File sizes will be larger but render times, encoding times, and all of your graphics, stills and any other material NOT shot HDV will look better too. It’s a 10 bit codec, and so working in 10 bit sequence settings makes a big difference in the end.

Thanks for your advice. Let me try to make my situation clear. I am shooting a project for a client (I am only shooting) and I am turning over the tapes to them to edit. They want me to shoot with a SONY Z7U camera in the HDV setting of 1440×1080 @23.97. I wish to use some additional cameras for some other POV’s which are not the SOny Z7U. One is a SOny Z1 HDV @ 1080I, and the other is a crash cam that shoots @ 1920 x 1080p @ 30fps on a MPEG-4 format. I want to take the footage from these cameras, put them into FCP into a sequence (different seg for each camera) that matches the SONY Z7U camera (HDV 1440×1080 @24P ) render it and out put the sequence into the camera (using it as a recorder) I have to give them HDV 1080p tapes @24p. No other formats. I know these is not the way to do it “right” but this is the way it is. Will it work? Thanks for your insight.
