I’m completing a DVD of an interview with my wife’s grandparents. It was done in 1996, her grandfather died in 2002 and her grandmother is now 94. We’re making copies for all of the children and grandchildren.

I added many scanned family photos from their childhood and married life. I’m including a data CD along with the DVD that will have copies of all of the photos.

We will see her grandmother at Thanksgiving and I’d like to sit down with her and have her describe each photo. One option is to make a video clip of her with each picture to include with the photos but I don’t have a laptop that I can run Vegas on to take with me at Thanksgiving and we need to finish this project soon.

Another option would be to have a file with thumbnails of each picture and a link to her voice describing each one. Has anyone done anything like this? I’ve got Vegas pro8 and Adobe CS4 creative suite.

Sounds like something that would be pretty easy to make in Flash CS4. Just make the thumbnails buttons that cause a large version of the image to appear and the voiceover to play.
Good luck. This kind of family history is so easy to do now and will be so valuable to the family in the future.

Camcorders record both video and audio. Why do you need Vegas on site? If you need to show her the video, you could simply render and, if needed, burn a DVD of your present timeline. Then use a media or DVD player and record her responses.

Bob, you’re right about not needing Vegas on site. I was a little too brief. I’m going to be at my inlaws house and right now I need to have the project finished that weekend for my father-in-law to mail out. Ideally I’d have a laptop with Vegas, record, assemble and finish it that weekend.

Since I won’t have Vegas available that weekend I’m wondering about other options that would allow me to finish this. I just realized my inlaws have windows vista pcs, I could use windows movie maker except I don’t think they have firewire and my camcorder needs that for downloading.

Kent, buy/borrow/rent some kind of portable audio recorder or even a small lav mic of some kind to use to record Grandma’s voice.
Generally an audio cable or a USB cable is all that’s needed to transfer the audio to a computer.
Bring what you’ve done so far with you to your inlaws.
Download trial versions of Vegas Pro 9 and DVDA Pro 5 while at the inlaws to be able to finish the project.
If you don’t want to go the download route, bring your own copies of the software AND serial numbers and install it on your inlaw’s computer.
As long as it’s not running on two machines at the same time, Sony is OK with you doing this.
After the weekend is over, uninstall it.

Mike, once again you come through for me. I’ve had software policy so ingrained into me that I hadn’t even thought about your solution, thanks for the help.

    🙂

    Thanks Kent.
My feeling is that there’s no point in complicating things when they don’t need to be.
