  • Major Broadcast Issue

Posted by Kevin Matluk on July 30, 2009 at 4:06 pm

On air, my show’s audio is all over the place. the levels are fine, but the sync is on and off throughout the whole show. In edit, audio is in sync, sent to tape, audio in sync, on air, Audio is way off. I’m editing in ProRes 1080i 29.97, captured as ProRes 1080i 29.97, Exporting as HDV in order to print to an HDV Master tape (Required by the networks), which in turn is down converted by the networks to SD for Close Captioning, and then Up-converted for broadcast on the network. (What a cluster) I thought the issue was in all the generations of video, but according to the network, the audio is in sync throughout, until it airs. What is going on here? Is it a problem with exporting the final show to HDV? Should I export as full quality ProRes to a drive and send to the networks?(Which they’ll accept). Or place my show into a basic DV-NTSC Timeline and put to tape, since its already getting down-converted to SD? What about Drop Frame vs Non Drop Frame, anything to do with that?

This is clearly the fault and problem of the broadcaster if you are sending
in tapes that are in synch.

Sometimes I think the control rooms are all run by interns nowadays.

That’s exactly What I thought, but how does it happen at two separate networks? one network the issue is not so bad, they down-convert for CC and air the show, the other network down-converts for cc, then up-converts for broadcast, and no other shows on those networks are having such problems. We can’t find where the issue is on either end.

Why do you capture HDV as ProRes, then output to HDV? That is about as pointless as downconverting to SD to close caption, then upconvert again for air. Any benefit at all you have for going to ProRes is completely blown away when you go back to HDV.

And HOW do you output to HDV? HDV decks can only be output to via firewire, meaning your footage has to be converted to HDV before you output…so how do you do it? That might be the reason things are off.

I have never heard of a network taking an HDV master. HDV is not a mastering format.

Originally our show was to air on an HD network, and so we captured everything ProRes, but we couldn’t get anyone to close caption HD in the time we have to get our shows out (3 weeks before air) and so we’re behind, getting a show a week out, no time to have anyone but the networks close caption (SD), When the show is done I export as HDV108060i, to an HDV timeline and export to tape, as well as send them a copy of the HDV file on drive. We had captured all our footage a few months back as ProRes, Worked on a DVD, few other projects fine, and now am in the process of doing the show, no time to recapture everything as HDV. Do you think HDV has something to do with this problem?

[Kevin Matluk] “Do you think HDV has something to do with this problem?”

    not likely.

if the files and tapes are in synch during playback….whatever problem they introduce
converting is theres and theres alone.

    Hi Kevin,
Sorry I don’t know the answer about your audio sync issue. However, I can offer some suggestions for solving your HD closed captioning issue.

CPC’s MacCaption software allows you to do all your HD and SD closed captioning in-house. You can save a lot of money and time compared to other captioning services.

However, HDV is a consumer format which doesn’t support closed captioning. You could deliver your show as captioned .MOV or .MXF files on a hard drive, or on XDCAM discs using the relatively inexpensive Sony PDW-U1, depending on your networks’ preferences.

Please see our website or give us a call for more information.

    Hope this helps!

The odd HDV workflow will not have any affect on the sync downstream.
If your footage is in sync when it leaves you studio, then the problem is down stream.
I’m not sure about the networks, but if they are anything like the public access group, things just happen because people aren’t paying attention.
Don’t beat yourself up over it.
But it is odd that a network would have that issue.

    Jason,
On a similar topic, I am having an issue with HD and closed captioning. I am using Kona3 capturing HDCAM to Prores…. I am digitizing a closed captioned show and making some quick edits and then laying back to HDCAM (HDW-D1800). The problem is that I was unable to carry over the closed captioning. Are you familiar with this dilemma? Any quick fix? Something in the menu on the HDCAM to channel the CC to the video channel and then back? I have 3 shows that need to be re-done asap. Any help is much appreciated!

    thanks,
    Ron

Unless you are using FCP7, final cut strips out the CC layer.

I installed 7.0 yesterday and captured the CC beautifully. Went to lay it back to tape without success. Any special trick?

    thanks,
