Maintain aspect ratio on export
Posted by Lucian Evans on November 7, 2007 at 11:03 amHi
Just finished editing a 16:9 piece but when playing back the film on a DVD on a computer a small annoying line is seen at the top of the screen. I thought i would export the film as a self contained quicktime and then scale it all up slightly to lose this line. My problem is that each time i export it i end up with a 4:3 quicktime.
I’m sure its not complicated but Its baffling me
cheers
Lucian

November 7, 2007 at 2:20 pmFirst.. don’t worry about the line.. instead apply a matte or mask in your Timeline to the image
Second its not 4:3 its 720 by 480
4:3 has a pixel aspect ratio of .9 and displays at 640 X 480 on appropriate device when you set the flag16:9 has a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2 and displays at 860 X 480 on appropriate device when you set the flag
DO NOT SCALE THE VIDEO

November 7, 2007 at 2:41 pmHi Richard
firstly thanks for the advice. I dont have a problem in actually getting rid of the line what i have a problem with is exporting the cut into an uncompressed quicktime whilst maintaining the aspect ratio. The edit in the timeline is 16:9 but when exported to a self contained quicktime it ends up 720 by 480.

You can either
1. Add it to a DVD and set the track to 16:9
2. Modify the Video track properties in QT pro to simulate the 860 X 480 display size
3. Run it through a compression tool and set it to 860 X 480 or a derivativeVideo is 720 X 480 for DV regardless is it is 16:9 or 4:3
The Aspect ratio correction must either be applies by software or hardware

November 7, 2007 at 3:07 pmcurrently i have a 16:9 edit in my timeline, once exported and placed on a DVD i have this annoying line. I want to export an uncompressed self contained film and then re import into a timeline as a single 16:9 movie not an edit with a thousand shots as now. Once i have a self contained film in the timeline i can add a mask. currently i would have to add a mask to each individual shot. The problem is that at the moment when i export to quicktime it changes the film into a 4:3 image. When i re import that image into my 16:9 timeline it remains 4:3.

November 7, 2007 at 3:09 pmScroll to the right and check the anamorphic column in the bin

November 8, 2007 at 1:58 amIf the clip is marked as anamorphic (for waht you imported) and you add it to an anamorphic sewuence… then you wouldn’t be having these problems

November 8, 2007 at 10:25 amThe footage was shot anamorphic, placed in an anamorphic sequence and marked as anamorphic.
Not sure you’re understanding what i’m saying but thanks anyway.

I am having this problem at the moment. I am currently dealing with this by changing the display in QT, but was wondering if you found a better solution?
