To anyone who knows about the MainConcept MPEG-2 Plug-In for Vegas,

    Situation:
I am rendering avi video to the MainConcept MPEG-2 file type. The pre-made template I am using is “DVD Architect NTSC video stream”. The question concerns the checkbox under the “Advanced Video” tab after you click the “Custom…” button next to the specified template.

    Question:
I was reading the MainConcept MPEG-2 Plug-in help from the Sony website and it said that for NTSC DVD’s you should check the box next to “Write sequence display extension”. However, the default for the Template that I am using leaves it unchecked. What’s better?

    More information:
    ——-
    “Write sequence display extension”:
Select this check box to write a sequence display extension for every every GOP (group of pictures). The sequence
display extension will define the vertical and horizontal resolution for the decoding device.

    Recommended settings:
    NTSC SVCD: checked
    PAL SVCD: checked
    NTSC DVD: checked
    PAL DVD: checked

This setting should be changed only in highly specialized situations where there is a specific reason to do so. It is
possible to force the decoding device to display the video at an author-specified vertical and horizontal resolution
that is different from the actual resolution, but this process will require some specialized tools and research by
    the user.
    ——-
(From the Sony Website:”MPEG Encoding Overview: Using the MainConcept MPEG-2 plug-in”)

I just find it odd that if they recommend it in the manuel, why it isn’t checked in the preset template. The help website that I quoted above refers to an older version, but I don’t see why that would make a difference.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Michael M.

Well, it seems to me that making the box checked for “Write sequence display extension” is a good idea. I did 2 tests. I rendered avi video into MPEG, with the box checked and with the box unchecked. The MPEG video that was rendered with the box checked came out significantly clearer than with the box unchecked. Someone please tell me if I’m doing something wrong, but I’m going to go ahead and ignore the template’s suggestion to leave it unchecked and stick with the clearer video.

I spoke too soon when I posted the previous post. The only reason it looked a lot clearer is because it was the second Windows Media Player window that I opened on the same computer. For some reason that brought the quality way down. I don’t know which is better. Does anyone? Anyway, I am going to go with the box checked and hope for the best. Whatever the quality difference is, it can’t be that much.
