  • MainConcept AVC Render Issue

Posted by Alan Britton on January 12, 2011 at 6:09 am

I am using Vegas Pro 10c. My footage is 1920×1080 30p AVCHD.

    Rendered to 1280×720 30p using MainConcept AVC/AAC (*mp4)

When viewing the footage it looks much better (more detail) than the Sony AVC renderer. HOWEVER, any movement in the image is very jerky, almost like a strobe effect. It gives the appearance of each frame studdering.

If I render the same footage using Sony AVC it is perfectly smooth, just softer looking (not as detailed).

Anyone else experiencing this or know why the MainConcept render is causing jerky motion. This is very bothersome because the MainConcept render, expecially with a two-pass VBR render, is nicer looking than the Sony one.

    Any help would be appreciated.

[Alan Britton] “Rendered to 1280×720 30p using MainConcept AVC/AAC (*mp4)”

Are you using 29.97 fps or 30.0 fps? What was the frame rate of your source footage?

    29.97 for source and output.

Hmmm… I was thinking that mismatched frame rates might cause this. I really can’t say why Sony AVC renders smoothly and MainConcept AVC does not for the same footage. I’m sorry I don’t have an answer.

Thanks John. I have checked to see if there is anything I can change in the project and event properties along with trying every variable in the custom settings before rendering and it doesn’t seem to make any difference. I’m sure I could have missed something, but I guess I’m stuck with the Sony AVC codec for now which results in a softer image.

You’re using 2 pass vbr. What is your low end bit rate setting. I’m thinking maybe it’s too low (motion takes a fair number of bits)

I don’t use MC. Is there a CBR setting? If so try that at a relatively high bit rate on a short sample and see if that clears it

I would check that Vegas understands your input video properly. 1080/30p is not a valid AVCHD format — it usually comes off the camera encoded at 1080/60i. There’s no particularly good reason that AVCHD doesn’t support 1080/30p in “native” format… it’s just the arbitrary list of resolution and frame rates built into Blu-ray (AVCHD comes from the Blu-ray specs).

If you saw stuttering movement back in the DV days, I’d claim you had your fields inverted. That ought to be impossible these days, particularly with progressive footage, but one of the best ways to go about solving a problem is figuring out what you need to do to create that problem. If I wanted an annoying stutter that only shows up in motion, I’d invert my interlace field order. Works every time 🙂

Anyway, make sure that you’re not getting any weirdness with attempts to unnecessarily de-interlace the source video. Why this would look different between Sony and Main Concept, I don’t know, but it’s the first place I would look.

I am looking for an editing program that does not have the problems like my Pinnacle Studio 14.
Between long render times, locking up and headaches in general, i am seriously in need of better software.
How does Vegas compare when shooting in AVCHD?
I have a Dual core i7 with 6Gb mem and 2Gb video card mem.
Shooting with Panasonic AG/HMC150 on SDHC cards.
Please let me know if Vegas works better with AVCHD.
    Thanks

For the most part, you’re going to get positive comments here (after all, it is a Vegas forum).
My suggestion is to download the trial versions of Movie Studio Platinum and Pro 10 and see for yourself.
Start with Platinum as it has less features (and is cheaper too) than Pro and may be enough for your editing needs.

Wow, are they up to 14? I left Pinnacle Studio at version 8.0. It was a buggy mess and every update to fix something just introduced more bugs. I think you’ll find Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD 10 a lot more stable and flexible. As Mike said, download the 30-day trial and ask questions here if you can’t figure something out.

Do you know if it is possible for me to bring over a 45 minute project from Pinnacle to Vegas and finish editing with Vegas?
I tried copy & paste but that did not work. Maybe copy & paste the editing notes, if there is a place in Vegas to paste them?
Or should I make a video_TS file and open it in Vegas?
    Ideas?
    Thanks for your help.
