Magnification
Feeling a bit embarrassed right now because I can’t figure this out, but rather than suffering silently I’ll share my problem.
I’m working in Premiere Pro CS5 and attempting to “zoom” in on a section of the video, while maintaining the footage dimensions.
My canvas is 1920 x 1080, but my footage is around 1650 x 1050. I have the footage positioned off the right so that there is a small equal black area around the top, right, and bottom. To the left there is a larger empty area that is used for other video tracks. With my 1650×1050 footage, I want to be able to zoom in or magnify on a section, but maintain the 1650×1050 total area used.
The scale tool does not work for this as any increase in scale is applied to the entire dimensions of the footage. Using position keyframes I can fill my ENTIRE canvas with the section that I want magnified, but I have no way of forcing that image into a 1650×1050 total potential canvas size. This is because scale is simply altering x and y, not actually magnifying.
The magnify effect that is built into premiere creates a layer that almost fits my needs, but the dimensions of the layer are tethered to the center position, which is tethered to the shape. I want to be able to adjust the x/y independently.
My guess is that I could create a sequence with a smaller canvas size and then scale or magnify, and then import that sequence into the other with the larger canvas size. The problem is that I’m going to be doing dozens of these zooms for each 5 minute segment… and there will be about 200 of these 5 minute or less segments. Just not an efficient use of time or timeline space.
Does anyone know of a way that I could achieve my desired effect? Is there a plugin somewhere that can do this?
Many Thanks!
Drew
