I recall that Vegas once came with magic bullets, which helped make to make ordinary DV video look better. I see no such plugins in Vegas Pro. Nothing that really gets rid of noise, and the sharpen function makes video look worse.

Is it worth buying this software, or any other?

Magic Bullet is no longer supported in Vegas.
Check out NewBlue for a wide variety of audio and video FX packages.

You also might want to look at VASST ReelPak Film Looks. There are 5 packs with various sets of looks that you can tweak any way you want. The RellPaks were used by Director Stan Harrington to give a film look to his indie film Bred in the Bone which was shot on DV.

Also Boris RED comes with some really nice film looks but that’s a much broader tool which cost more because it does so many other things.

    Thanks
so which would be the best, I have some videos of people which are slightly noisy because of poor lighting, I like to get truer skin tones, without making the colours look oversaturated which happens when I try to tweak them in Vegas using HSL adjust, or they look more grainy when I use the sharpen plugin

NewBlue has a noise reducer built into its Video Essentials II package.
Neat Video is another noise reduction package.
Both have trial versions to see which one better fits your needs.

Try using the Color Corrector for accurate skin tones. It gives you a whole lot more control than HSL. If the video is very grainy you might need a noise reduction plug-in. Neat Video is very good at this but that’s all it does. Boris RED and BCC7 and also NewBlue FX have noise reduction plugins. You might want to download the trials and check them out.

    Joseph,

The free Magic Bullet Movie Looks HD can still be downloaded from the official Sony Vegas website:

    Thanks for the feedback

I am testing The Neat Video Demo. It seems effective,I have obtained some beautiful results restoring babies skin, but it confines itself to a frame size of 640X 480, my videos are mostly PAL 720×576
also, it fails to render the luminance / brightness channel, so I find myself having to re render the video with Vegas.

Also, it does not seem to upload the saved presets I make.

With the Vast real packs, it is hard to know which to choose as there is no detailed description, for example what is the difference between ReelPak 4 and ReelPak 5 and ReelPak 1 ?
    Thanks

ReelPak-4 & 5 are different movie looks. ReelPak-1 is a variety of classic looks.

We give you an example of every look. That’s the difference. They all have different looks. If you look at the pictures on the wbe page you will see the original frame and how all the looks make the frame look different. I don’t know any other way of showing you the difference other than showing the images we have there. If you read the names of the looks you’ll get an idea of what movie or era they are trying to emulate. For example, on ReelPak-2 TV Looks we even added the name of the show the look is emulating.

[Joseph Dezordi] ” it confines itself to a frame size of 640X 480,”
“Also, it does not seem to upload the saved presets I make.”

Those are limitations of the demo.
The home version goes up to 720 x 576 and the Pro version is unlimited.

Ok thanks I know I saw the different before and after looks, ( hitchcock, Dune )
What I did not see was a noise reduction function
