I wonder if anyone can shed any light on my problem.

I’m using CS4 and i’ve got 45mins of edited DV footage from two cameras (two different angles). Its got simple cross fades, about 4 sound files and a few title screens. Fairly basic. However on the wide footage I have dropped a “Looks” effect onto it to brighten it up and I’m really pleased with the results.

Rendering out the timeline for some reason was a real problem because of this effect. (I know this cause without the effect it rendered fine)It would only render 5mins of footage at any one time. Any more and premiere would hang and I would have to end program from task manager. I tried everything and wasted a lot of time. In the end I gave up and resorted to doing 5 mins at a time until it was all done. A real pain in the backside!

Now I have the same problem when trying to encode it. AME can do about 5 mins at a time and know more. But due to the nature of the project I cant do it like that. I wont! There must be a solution?? It encodes fine without the “looks” effect on it. I just dont understand.

I’ve read so many threads on so many different forums about similar issues with Magic Bullet and I’ve tried everything but still to no avail. I really like the effect but cant afford to waste any more time on this. If I cant solve it I’ll just have to add the colour/contrast effects manually (Which wont look as good!)

Any help would be gratefully recieved! Many thanks.

    FYI I’m using;
    Q6600
    4GB
    150GB Raptor
    ATI 4870 GPU

    Windows 7
    Premiere Pro 4.0
    Magic Bullet Looks 1.2

Not sure but Red Giant continues to have issues with 64 bit systems.

Not all the time and they do not support 64 with some of their programs.
have you contacted Red Giant, They are always good at getting basck to me when I have problems.

The first thing i noticed you are still running on Premiere 4.0.
    Update to 4.2
I am running MBL on W7 and CS4.2 just fine.

HD or SD video? If HD m2t files, then rendering can be a problem with Prem Pro regardless of whether it is 64bit or 32bit…this is specially true if you use more than one track or try and stacking tracks with Look on seperate tracks.

The best solution (besides avoiding PP and HD m2t video) is to color correct using Looks first… then, render Look applied project as a new video file… use this new color corrected video file and edit using the new file…and, edit from that point. It’s not the most versitile way to solve this problem… but, it works.

First of all, thanks very much for your responses. I really appreciate the advice at this stressfull time.

Ann – In regards to updating to PP4.2, from past experience and from talking to others, updating during the middle of a project is a big no no! Just in case your system/software takes a dislike to it and potentially losing/corrupting your project thus far. I’ve downloaded the 4.2 update but unless anyone can assure me its not going to mess anything up I wont be installing it until after I’ve finished this current job. Or its possible to roll-back to 4.0 if there is an issue?

Joe – The footage is standard definition. I did start off by adding the effect to the wide footage track first and then rendering it out but then I continued to add the other tracks/effects and edit. I’m now if the process of encoding just that track with effect on to see if it works. I’ll let you know.

    Thanks again guys.

Still not working. Tried encoding just that track with only the MB Looks effect on it but it still fails. What I have noticed though is that it does keep failing at approx the same point every time. Between 50 to 55mins in…

    Any other suggestions?

Can anyone advise me on what I mentioned earlier about updating to 4.2?

    Thanks.

As it is not working properly i would deinstall, run clean script a couple of times and reinstall.

As for updating in the middle of a project i have no issues.

Render MB with original video into smaller pieces…

Take the original video… create seperate projects… and render smaller sections of each MB plus video combination.

Finally, take each rendered smaller portions and combine into one new project… render each piece into one new …hopefully… rendered project.

I have been using Looks since its was released and have had the same problems with it….it will only render out (in premieres timeline) about 200-250 frames before freezing premiere and requiring a restart…sometimes it will do more sometimes less.I now adjust my work area to suit-render-save etc….its a pain in the ass but I love the looks:) it provides. I am running Premiere CS4.2 on a windows vista 64 bit system…an ati radeon 1gb video card and 12 gigs of Ram
    no answers unfortunately!
    cheers

Well I’ve tried everything I can possibly think of and everything you’ve all suggested but it still wont encode. 🙁

Lastly, I uninstalled, clean scripted and re-installed and I updated to 4.2 but still the same issue. I now give up.

Might look at doing what Joe suggested as I really like the effect but if it turns out to be too much of a pain in the backside (which I think it will) I’ll try and do the colour correction manually.

Thanks all for your help. Although its been a huge inconvenience, I’ve learnt a bit more!

    Chris.
