    Hello my friends,
    again here with another problem.
    I am editing on a powerbook g3 / final cut pro 3
and sounds magic to me that i have captured some footage -video and audio-
and when i play it in the viewer the audio comes with a series of beeps
yet when i play the actual quick time captured the audio sounds perfect:
so i guess it becomes beeped when i open it in the viewer…
what should i do to get rid of those beeps?
i have recaptured it already and i got the same beeping
    thanks a lot,
    bombonia

You have to render the audio tracks.

Yes, the beeps mean you need to RENDER the audio.

BUT, it would NOT BEEP (and you would not need to render) if you set your timeline to match your capture settings (or vice versa).

BTW, you can’t “change” an existing timeline from one setting to another. You must first change the settings and then open a new timeline with those settings.

Also, make sure your camera is set to 48 kHz audio sample rate recording (16 bit, not 12 bit) for best quality.

No disrespect intended to Matte, who has enlightened me on several things in the past, but…

If you want to change the settings on the current sequence, hit Command – Zero.

    thanx a lot, but
i didn’t drag it to the timeline yet,
    it beeps on the viewer
and it only happens to one of the clips i captured, from the same tape, same footage….

If you happened to capture footage from a Canon camcorder (especially an XL1) it may be that the audio clips are recorded at a non-standard sample rate.

47.98 kHz or 48.12 kHz or some such.

    Only choice is to render.

Did the original quick time come from a camera capture, or did you import it from something else?

Sorry for not reading your original post more carefully.

    thanx alot,
but, as i said, it only happened on the viewer window.
once in the timeline, the beep was gone (!)
even in the viewer, when i clicked the audio tabs, there were no beeps written, but sounded.
the footage is from a sony camcorder and is ok.
i have edited already, but i wonder where they come from.

    thank you so much

[bombonia] “when i clicked the audio tabs, there were no beeps written, but sounded.”

That’s no surprise, the beeps would never appear IN THE WAVEFORM.

They are only sent directly to the output when “needed”.

If there’s nothing wrong with the capture and timeline settings…

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.
