February 4, 2021 at 2:27 pmIf you bought a 2019+ MacPro, you know they don’t normally start up with the traditional chime. I have reinstalled Catalina (various builds starting with 10.15.4) about ten times, because other than Disk Utility > First Aid, I can’t find any utilities that fix OS related or OSX app issues. Reinstalling to the rescue!
(Sidebar: I use CleanMyMacX, but it hasn’t been able to fix any of the OS problems I’ve had.)After I reinstalled Catalina for about the sixth time, my MacPro started chiming on boot, just like the older MacPros did, but louder.
I’m just wondering if this has happened to anybody else. Otherwise, it’s working great. I don’t think I’ve had to reinstall 10.15.7. Or, if so, maybe once or twice.
This isn’t a problem. Just unexpected. -

February 12, 2021 at 3:56 pmNot sure why this would have happened but you can control the startup chime if you like it or don’t like it.
Just open the Terminal.app and run this command:
sudo nvram StartupMute=%00
Then Reboot. You will hear that wonderful chime again.
You can turn if off with:
sudo nvram StartupMute=%01
Enjoy. 😉

February 12, 2021 at 5:02 pmThanks for the tip. Now that the chime is back, I’ve grown to like it. It’s like an old friend returning after a long absence.
